Call us, helplines urge troubled teens
1a) List two reasons why teens are reluctant to call helplines despite the promise of anonymity and professional help.
b) According to Ms Lily Chu, how does Touch Leadership and Mentoring prefer to help troubled teens?
2) Have you confided in your friends or family members about the problems you face in school/ life? Why or why not?
Have you been betrayed by your friends before? If yes, how? (You may change the names of the people involved for privacy)

ANSWER

1a) They did not feel comfortable with outsider. Teenager tend not to talk with strange. Some more sharing thier personal life with unknown people. Teenager will feel uneasy about it.
1b)Advise them and tell them what is right and what is wrong.
2) Yes, i do. When ever i came back from school, if i have any problem in school i will tell my mother because if we never share with other our head is full of problems and it might cause us headache. If we got lots of problems in our mind we cannot focus on studying and lots of things. Example:stress, cannot cope with study... Actually i had forgot whether i have been betrayed by my friends but if it was a yes, i think mostly was about secret example: i have a friend which i had told her my secret and he/her told others or even my enemy. Another kind is about telling other our plan example: we a group of people have plan to ignore the "person" cause some reasons but one of the group member have told the "person" about it.

1a) What are the 4 rules for religious harmony?

b) In your opinion, how can we maintain a common space in schools?
2) Do you respect other religions? Why or why not? What do you think of children who stay away from their parents' funerals because they believe the traditional rites are against their new religion?
ANSWER
1a)1. All groups have to exercise tolerance and restraint: Christians cannot expect this to be a Christian society, Muslims cannot expect this to be a Muslim society, ditto with the Buddhists, the Hindus and the other groups as many faiths share this country, share this island. Each has different teachings, different practices. If we have to live together in peace, then all have to adopt 'live and let live' as our principle.
2. Keep religion separate from politics: Religion in Singapore cannot be the same as religion in America or religion in an Islamic country. If one group were to invoke religion in this manner in Singapore, others are bound to push back and invoke their faith.
3. Government must remain secular: The Government's authority comes from the people, and it has to be neutral and fair to all. The laws are passed by Parliament, elected by the people. They don't come from a sacred book but this did not mean the Government was against religion we just uphold sound moral values.
4 Maintain the common space that all Singaporeans share: The common space - when sharing meals, or at schools and workplaces - has to be neutral and secular and that's the only way all of us can feel at home in Singapore and at ease. If we must serve everybody food which is halal, no beef and vegetarian, I think we will have a problem of not having meals together.
1b)
2)Yes, of course i do respect other religions as we are all staying in the same country, the same earth so we must respect other religions and if we want to stay united we must respect each other and treat others well and their religion equally.
I think those children who away from their parents' funerals because they believe the traditional rites are against their new religion are very heartless. Their parents bring them up until they are married but instead of being respect and thankful, they are getting heartless, ungrateful and disrespect. I dislike those children who are not filial their parents and they thought that it is their parents' duty to bring them up cause it was their choice to bring them into this world. However, they did not know that during the pregnency of 9months for all mothers, it was the most difficult and dangerous time and yet just because they believe the traditional rites are against their new religion they did not want to go for their funeral after their death. For me i think that no matter what, parents are the most imporant in our lives!

1b)The Lion Befrienders a voluntary welfare organisation which sends volunteers out to lonely senior citizens, has also alerted those under its charge about these scamster.
2) Yes of course! Doing social work can have lots of benefit one of them are make the elderly happy because their home have been clean up and someone to talk with so they will not be lonely and bored. The others are we can be more independent doing social work and it can make us people be more kind, helpful as well as caring if we know how to help others next time we wouldn't abondon our parents to home. I love to help others when they need help from others. Social work is a profession for those with a strong desire to help improve people’s lives. They assist people by helping them cope with issues in their everyday lives, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems. Social workers help clients function the best way they can in their environments. They help them deal with their relationships and solve personal and family problems.

A Deadly Business

1a) What are the 2 worrying trends about drug trafficking mentioned in the article?
b) Why are Singaporeans increasingly being used as "drug mules"?
2) What will you do if you find out that one of your friends is selling drugs? How will you react if someone tries to sell you drugs?

ANSWER
1a) The 2 worrying trends are more teenager about 14 years old which being caught in drug trafficking & the dealers are using Singaporean to traffic drug from one country to another or from other country to Singapore by a women and more Singaporeans are being arrested for drug crimes overseas. Just between 2002 and 2006, some 330 people were caught in Thailand and Malaysia, where many are behind bars.
1b) Drug mules are runners who move drugs from one country to another. The main reason is that Singapore do not need a visa for many places and singaporeans are also less likely to be checked because of Singapore's reputation for being tough on drugs.
2) If i find out that one of my friends is selling drugs i will inform the teachers, counsellor and his/her's parent. Firstly, i will warn my friend to stop doing illegal things, or else you yourself will be regret forever on what you are doing now as I know that doing drugs can greatly affect our future and if he just because of his thirst for the money they get from selling drugs which is not worth. On the other hand i will tell my friend the disadvantage about selling drugs but if he had been awake and knew that he was wrong then i will leave it to him to think it over himself. After my advise, if he still cannot stop i will immediately contact the CNB without any delay as i do want hime to walk the wrong way and end up harming his customers by selling illegal substances that would ultimately harm their health and lives. If someone tries to sell me drugs i will giving any excuses which can run away but if he keeps ran up to me i will call the police for help as well as the police will caught him as it was kill two birds with one stone. While i doing the right for helping him to walk the correct side of the law.

Hawkers fall prey to brazen break-ins

1a) Why is it easy for burglers to break into stalls at the two markets in the kallang area?
1b)What is the Geylang East Central Merchants' Association going to do about the break-ins?
2) What do you think should be done to tighten the security of the markets? What do you think of the burglars who brazenly break into the stalls?
ANSWER
1a) The reasons are the units are open at the top and both markets, none of the stalls had their roller shutters and locks tampered with so the thieves got in through the open ceilings, getting a leg up on the pipes or metal bars running along the walls.
1b) The chairman, Tan Seng Peng, said that they will be in touch with the relevant authorities, such as the National Environment Agency(NEA) and the town councils, to look into improving security and at last possibly by modifying stall layout and design.
2) I think that they should change the stalls layout and design but at first when they were planning the market they should have think of a better layout and design so as it had been built there will not have many cases on brazen break-in. After so many years, the chairman finally said they will possibly by modifying stalls layout and design, by this it make me felt that he was so irresponsible. Mean while, the hawkers should have place a camera, if they did not have the effort to purchase on a camera, they should ask the chairman to pay some amount. On the other hand, putting camera is not enough, the police should patrol round that area so that the burglers would not have the chance to break-in. I think that the burglers are selfish and cold blooded as they never think before that the money that they stole is the hawkers' blood and sweat money, they only think of themselves. however, you think of another ways now the world is very cruel, if you do not have any literary talent you never think of finding a good job so i felt a little sympathy for them. However if they only think that it was more easier for stealing than working i will not even sympathy them and i will looked down on them.

3 Cheers for the Team
1a) Why is cheerleading an expensive sport?
b) What makes cheerleading such a tough sport?
2b)What is your opinion of cheerleaders? If given a chance, would you join cheerleading? Why/ why not?

ANSWER

1a) It is an expensive sport because it need a megawatt smile which is priceless, hair products cost 50 dollars for a team per competition, medical insurance cost 30 to 100 dollars mostly covered by school and organisations. Just a bottle of nutritional supplements and vitamins cost 50 to 130 dollars. Their tailored costumes for each season needs 100 to 400 dollars as some hire tailor from Thailand. They also needs to have gymnastics classes and workshop which per session cost 50 dollars and at last is the tights which cost 2 to 25 dollars which also imported from Thailand.

1b) Cheerleading needs a hefty financial commitment, it really a team sport which needs team work to get stunts done. It is challenging and requires resilience, perseverance and passion.
2)
I think that chearleaders must have teamwork, responsibility, passion, resilience and so on if one of the member do not have any teamwork the whole thing will not be successful. To be a good chearleaders there are a lots of failure you must have if not you will never learnt how to cope with it. I would not want to join cheerleading even i though i have a chance because i am not interested in that and i do not think that i am suitable in the particular sports. To be a chearleaders, you must have the courage for being thrown up in the mid-air while doing some tricks. It will injure yourself when you are practice some particular stunt and need a lots of medical to recover and it will cost you a lot of money.

Minister questions plans to separate conjoined twins(Part A – Prime – Page A1 & A6)

Q1)What are some of the problems involved in separating a conjoined twin?
Q2)If you were a part of a conjoined twin, would you rather stay together with your twin for the rest of your life or would you risk both your lives to go for an operation? Why?
ANSWER
Q1)Some of the problems involved in separating a conjoined twin are surgeons have to pick one twin to die in order to save the other. Eventhrough one of them survive, he/she would often be left with serious brain damage or may be not in a good shape. There is a risk of separating a conjoined twin. One major problem which is making sure that blood supply to both brains is maintained at all times.
Q2)If i were a part of a conjoined twin, i would rather risk both our lives to go for an opertation. Because it was very inconvenient to having a conjoined twin, no matter what you do the other will know and when ever you go the other twin will come you if she doesn't like the place or doesn't want to go there so what we going to do is it respect her or respect myself? Our ideas may not be the same so it will make both of us to fight by little problem just like this and it may hurt our hearts. If this kind of thing happen, we will hate each other and our realationship will become as plain as a plain water. Once there was shows which said about twin which are conjoined and they both falled in love in the same person but the person only like her young sister after that there realationship become as plain as a plain water. Her sister was very angry, hated her young sister and she decided to go to a operation and separate themselves. After the operation, her sister killed her young sister. So you see... So i myself think that better separate each other since when small eventhrough there is a risk.

Businesses are still big on doing good(Part B - Home Section - Page B6 - The Home Market)

Q2)How important it is to be socially responsible? And do you think it is still possible to make a social impact during recession?
ANSWER
Q1)Big businesses are not cutting down on their Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) programmes. However, some companies have even stepped up their efforts to fulfill their corporate social responsibilities. According to CSR Asia, Hong Kong-based firm which aims to promote good corporate citizenship in this region. Communications group Sing-Tel's CSR programme is divided into four quadrants: Community, which supports initiatives focusing on youth and education; Environment; which aims to reduce carbon emmisions and cut down on paper usage; Marketplace, which involves corporate governance; and Workplace, which provides learning and development opportunities and quality work-life balance for its staff. Companies are increasingly realising that CSR is not philanthropy and there are many ways to make a social impact without the need to spend large amounts of money.
Q2) Social responsible can help us continue work in a company and work towards a sustainable future, because it can help the company to earn more money. Sustainable supply chain, environment and communityy responsibility, nutrition and well-being and employment experience are equally important as philanthropic activites. If a company doesn't have social responsible do you think that people will work for the company and do customers want to buy thing from the company? Of course not, why because social responsible is very important. Yes, i think it is still possible to make a social impact during recession.

Save the planet? This is a job for school kids…(Part B – Home Section – Page B3)

Q1)What are some of the things that schools in Singapore are doing in order to take care of the environment?

Q2)Do you think one person's effort in reducing , reusing and recycling will make a difference in saving the enviroment? What steps have you taken in the effort to save the earth?
ANSWER
Q1)Some of the things that schools in Singapore are doing in order to take care of the environment are, for science and social studies classes, some school are asking their students to bring electricity bills from home to track their month-to-month energy use and are teaching them to save energy and at Lakeside Primary School at least half its 600 primary 4 and 5 pupil take part in such an exercise too. Pupils of Elias Park Primary contribute fruit peels to the school's three compost bins and once a month primary 3 pupils bring fruit from home as part of a healthy-eating exercise as well as they then get to throw fruit waste into the worm compost bins, which convert food waste into fertilisers. At Marsiling Secondary, all lower secondary students take an environment-education module throughout those lessons they have learnt how the Earth has been harmed.
Q2) I think that one person's effort in reducing, reusing and recycling will not make a difference in saving the environment because if only one person saving the enviroment, thousand and millon of people are not reducing, reusing and recycling so there will not make a difference in saving the enviroment but i still play my part not to litter around and if my friends throwing litter on the floor i will tell to pick it up. The steps that i taken in the effort to save the earth are using 3R-reduce, reuse and recycle by turning off the fan or air-conditioner when i am not using, sometime use laptop instead or computer, turn off the light on day time, turn off the light at the time of 10pm, study doing the day or at night when the light on for everyone to use together, turn off the televison when nobody is using, sometime let my hair nature dry instead of using the hair dryer or fan, reuse a paper which still have a blank page, use a can to make a pen holder, reuse the old file, reuse exercise book to be a notebook, reuse plastic bags, recycle the newspaper or any magazine which i do not want and recycle the bottle or can.

Reforming sex offenders
(Part B – Home Section – Page B5 – Law & Order)

Q1)How does the treatment programme of the Singapore Prison Service help the sex offenders?
Q2)Do you think that sex offenders should be given a second chance in the society? State your reasons.

ANSWER

Q1)It help them not to make their same mistakes again and let them change their attitude and the mind of sex habit by giving them the treatment programme of the Singapore Prison Service. This treatment programme do work on others except for Bala Kuppusamy and he is the only who had failed the treatment.
Q2)I think that sex offenders should be given a second chance in the society. My reasons are not every people is perfect they have done something which is againest the law, if every people do not give them a second chance do you that the world population will increase or decrease. I am not saying that every people which did something wrong which againest the law should be given a second chance. Example like killing a people, the person must hang to death. But if a prisoner like Bala Kuppusamy always come out and in, then we should not be given a secong chance to them in the society. Because they might hurt the people. If a person who is being sex by others do you think that he/she can carry the truth, of course not!

Man and beast face off in Sumatra (World Page A8)

Q1) What is illegal logging?
Q2) What can you do to stop the Sumatran tiger from extinction?
ANSWER
Q1) Illegal logging can be described as forestry practices or activities connected with wood harvesting, processing and trade which is breaking the law. Illegalities occur right through the chain from source to consumer, the harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including corrupt, extraction without permission or from a protected area, cutting of protected species or extraction of timber in excess of agreed limits. Illegalities may also occur during transport, including illegal processing and export as well as misdeclaration to customs, before the timber enters the legal market. Examples: clear-cutting natural forest, then failing to replant, ignoring selective cutting guidelines and so on.
Q2) I can give some opinion to the government by giving him that Singapore need to do more protected area to stop them for illegal logging so that the Sumatran tiger will decrease from extinction as this is the part which government should do to protect the extinction animals. If this doesn't work, they should sent some polices to petrol some place where the people will illegal logging at there like forest, to catch them form illegal logging. Government also can build some huts and inside put a lot of foods for the Sumatra tiger and let them live more comfortable. The poachers or hunters wanted to kill the Sumatran Tigers is just only selling their skins or internal organs for money so the police can tell the collector to get their information. If the police have the information they could easily caught them. I can also paste some poster on illegal logging and its write about this: Please stop illegal logging! You may hurt or even killed the animals like Sumatran tiger and now it going to be extinction. If any people saw somebody illegal logging please contact this hotline example "61234567".

Getting to the heart of Total Defense (Home-Youthink pg B7)

Q1) In the last line, what did the writer mean by suggesting that “he may have found more porcupines than rats?”
Q2) What’s worth giving up your life for?
ANSWER
Q1)Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong asked:"Are we rats that scurry away at the sound of footsteps" or "porcupines that bristle to warn their aggressors away"? So the writer said "he may have found more porcupines than rats" as it mean that they did not scared of the people who attack Singapore. Now the writer found more brave soldiers just like porcupines and chase away them and fight for it.
Q2)What's worth giving up my life? The answer is i will sacrifice my life for my love ones example my parents. They bring me to the world and bring up me for 14 years already. They work very hard to earn money and take good care of the family/home and sometimes they got injured by their work or they got back pain but they still go for work the next day. When i saw that i really felt very painful in my heart. As i heard that parents always the biggest. If Singapore were faced with a mortal crisis, my first thought would be protect my parents and myself. And many of my peers equally have no qualms about cutting and running for their own sake as long astheir families' safety was secured so i decided that it is worth to giving up my life for my parents.

No Loitering After School (IN! pg 7)
Q1) Why Coral Secondary School forbids students to idle around near their school in their school uniform?
Q2) Do you agree with this rule? Explain your answer.
ANSWER
Q1) Coral Secondary School forbids students to idle around near their school in their school uniform because their principal Veronica Ng said that Coral Secondary places much emphasis on inculcating in their students good habits like using time prudently. Then the student will not the intesest to loiter in the malls after school.
Q2)No, i disagree. Because if our parents not at home as we forget to bring the keys or parents never give then we go shopping outside is that wrong ? Or eating outside suddenly we saw something we like and go into the shop is that wrong too? What if we doing a project and go to place after school because only on that day we are free just then a teacher saw us and she thought we are loitering outside but we never and she capture the picture of us. She give to the principal and we being scolded without doing anything wrong. Even eating outside while at home no lunch also cannot is that too strict it will make the students felt angry and hate the school then they will always saying bad things about that school or maybe it will make them no mood to study just because they are angry and their result will down.

Master Of One(LIFE pg4)
Q1)What was Jack Neo's vocation when he was serving the nation?
Q2)"Hard work lead to success" To what extend do you agree with this statement ?
ANSWER
Q1)Jack Nao's vocation was a quartermaster when he was serving the nation. Then a platoon commander at an infantry unit, was posted to the Singapore Armed Forces' Music and Drama Company.
Q2)Yes i do agree with the statement "Hard work lead to success". Example you having a test next week but you never study, will you get a high marks? No, you don't because that say that "Hard work lead to success". If you think that rich can do anything you like that is a wrong thought. If you think that you rich, then you can use money to cheat and get the highest mark in the whole class or even whole school then you also wrong. You need to try many many times to have a success. If everyone cheat do you think that the world will be success? No, i don't think so because there no one is true. Even a kampong boy success by became a top comedian that is Jack Neo why can't you? Just be hardworking and you will success so when you success you will felt happy don't you?
